Division II Basics: Transfer Students
Division II Basics for Transfers
For transfer students, Division II encompasses four semesters (two years) worth of work, some of which may be from your previous college or university.
- Division II is a concentration of academic work developed with the guidance of a faculty committee in one or more areas of study. It can include other (non-related) courses and activities to enrich your educational experience.
- Division II is directed by a two-person Hampshire College faculty committee, one chair and one member. The committee chair is your faculty advisor. An initial faculty advisor is assigned to students based on their academic interests listed in the application and course registration.
- Work in a student’s concentration mainly focuses on courses, but can also include field study, exchange, internships, and other approved learning activities. All activities must be evaluated, approved by the Division II committee for inclusion in the Division II portfolio, and recorded by Central Records on TheHub.
- During Division II, students must also complete a multiple cultural perspectives requirement, and a community service requirement, known as the Community Engaged Learning Activity (CEL- 2). Division II also includes the fulfillment of the Race and Power requirement and a supported project.
To pass Division II students must write a retrospective essay and hand in a portfolio of Division II work, as specified by their committee. Once the committee receives these, there will be a final meeting with the student to discuss Division II. The chair, with input from the member, writes an evaluation of the student’s Division II performance and passes the student into Division III.
