Science and Religion Centers and Academic Resources
Columbia University Center for the Study of Science and Religion
Now a subset of the Earth Institute at Columbia, the CSSR seeks "To reconsider the large question--is the natural normative?--from both scientific and religious perspectives at once" (from the mission statement). The CSSR offers a pre-med, clinical-based internship focusing on palliative care (care of the dying) at the Terrence Cardinal Cooke Healthcare Center.
Zygon Center for Religion and Science
The Zygon Center is located at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC). The center is "dedicated to relating religious traditions and scientific knowledge in order to gain insight into the origins, nature, and destiny of humans and their environment" (from the mission statement). The center sponsors two academic courses annually as well as a teaching program, research program, and outreach program.
Institute on Religion in an Age of Science
IRAS is a "society of natural scientists, social scientists, philosophers, religion scholars, theologians, and others" (mission statement) and hosts an annual conference on topics of contemporary science and religion issues. IRAS also co-publishes Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science with the Center for Advanced Study in Religion and Science (CASIRAS).
Center for the Study of Information and Religion
CSIR is "a research initiative of the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS)" at Kent State University. The center supports research examining "the various institutions and agents of religion and their effect on social knowledge through the use, dissemination and diffusion of information." CSIR hosts an Annual Conference on Information and Religion and an Annual Symposium on Information and Religion.
Centre for Advanced Studies on Islam, Science and Civilisation
CASIS is a program of the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, supporting post-grad scholarship particularly relating to the study of Islamic thought integrated with contemporary science and technology (mission statement). CASIS is based in Kuala Lumpur.
Youngstown State University Center for Islamic Studies, Studies in Contemporary Islam
Studies in Contemporary Islam is a journal published by YSU's Center for Islamic Studies from 1999-2008. Issues are available for download (pdf).
International Society for Science and Religion
ISSR is a U.K.-based academic group and organizer of several international conferences. ISSR also has two research and education projects: The New Biology: Implications for Philosophy, Theology and Education (ongoing) and Human Nature and Embodied Cognition: Perspectives from Science and the World's Religions.
The Spectrum is a multi-university project studying "the social and cultural contexts of public perceptions of the relationship between 'science' and 'religion' across all faiths and none" (about). The project is open for participation, and you can also check out the blog.
University of Notre Dame Contending Modernities
Contending Modernities is a program based at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. The program is currently studying the understandings and reactions of Islam and Catholicism to "the radical transformations that have characterized the modern world" (about). The program has two working groups: Science and the Human Person, and Global Migration and the New Cosmopolitanism.
Boston University Institute for the Study of Muslim Societies and Civilizations
The Institute is an interdisciplinary program connecting "anthropology, history, religion, politics, literature, language, and the arts" (about). The Institute offers two undergraduate minors and a graduate fellowship.
Islam & Science is an international project aimed at facilitating dialogue on Islam, modernity, modern scientific knowledge and the role of science (about). The project has organized international workshops designed to educate participants on "the fields of 'Science and Islam' and 'Science and Religion.'" McGill Centre for Islam and Science
MCIS is an international program examining the history of science in Islamic societies, scientific policies of Islamic countries in the modern day, and scientific educational systems of the past and present (about). Check out the Centre's blog.
