Alum Lisa Trivedi to Give Lecture in Honor of Professor's Retirement
In honor of the retirement of Professor of History and American Studies Susan Tracy at the end of this term, her former student Lisa Trivedi 86F will return to campus December 4 to give the lecture "The Mother's Death: Bombay's millwomen and the physicians who treated them." The lecture will be held at 3:30 p.m. in East Lecture Hall of Franklin Patterson. It is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the lecture in the faculty lounge.
Professor Trivedi, an associate professor of history at Hamilton College, says Professor Tracy has been one of her most important mentors from her time at Hampshire through graduate school and into her career. Hampshire Professors Norman Holland and Jeffrey Wallen worked with Trivedi in arranging the lecture, which Professor Tracy said was “a great surprise.”
“It’s very humbling when a student says you’ve made a difference in their life, because you know they also made a difference in your life and your teaching,” Professor Tracy said. “Lisa was a terrific student, and it was exciting to find out she was coming back to campus for this.”
"Susan Tracy became my teacher and mentor in my first semester of college when I enrolled in Women's Lives, Women's Stories," said Professor Trivedi. "She introduced me not only to historical study, but also to the power of feminism and enabled me to come to terms with my own identity as the child of an immigrant. I would not be a South Asian historian today if it weren't for her. I know I am not alone among Hampshire students and graduates when I say that the college has been so fortunate to have had such an outstanding teacher, mentor, and scholar."
Professor Trivedi is an associate professor of history at Hamilton College. After graduating from Hampshire, she earned a master's degree in South Asian history from the University of Chicago in 1992, and a PhD from the University of California, Davis, in 1999. She currently teaches at Hamilton College. She is the author of Clothing Gandhi's Nation: Homespun and Modern India (2007) and Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal K. Patel's photographs of women in Ahmedabad, 1937 (2014), as well as several essays in scholarly journals and edited volumes.
