Artist and Hampshire College Alum Mequitta Ahuja’s Newest Exhibit an ‘Ode to Motherhood and Loss’
Baltimore artist and Hampshire College alum Mequitta Ahuja 96S was featured in ArtNet for her new exhibit “Ma” at New York’s Aicon Gallery. The exhibit, a series of 25 new pieces, serves as a reflection and meditation on the artist’s recent loss of her mother. The pieces grapple with themes of grief, memory, and connection.
Ahuja’s body of work often seeks to challenge the expectations of the self-portrait, especially the self-portrait of a woman or a person of color. Her work has been exhibited across the United States and internationally at the Studio Museum in Harlem; the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston; the National Portrait Gallery; the Baltimore Museum of Art; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others. She holds an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago and has received numerous awards and fellowships.
Of her time at Hampshire College, Ahuja says:
“At Hampshire, I gained the open-ended tools of self-education that every artist needs. They are the same intellectual tools I use in the studio each day: articulate my goals, strategize my approach, assess the results….and begin again.”
