Hampshire Professor Nathan McClain on Expanding Our Definition of Literature
“One of the things that brought me to Hampshire was the opportunity to enlarge my own understanding of the questions I had about the world and certainly my place within it.”
Nathan McClain, assistant professor of creative writing and African American literary arts, shares how Hampshire has encouraged him to continue to grow artistically and intellectually. McClain believes in challenging mainstream notions of "literature," including multi-media analyses in his classes. He admires the passion and drive he sees from Hampshire students and credits it to the faculty's ethos of engaging students as full human beings, not just producers of academic work.
"Hampshire has really wanted to think about and enact what's possible in education. I think that's what we're striving towards, I think that each of the faculty members and colleagues that are here are really deeply committed to that work," says McClain.
