NNAF Names Vanguard Award for Marlene Gerber Fried
“It is her forward-thinking leadership and commitment to reproductive freedom that laid the groundwork for expanding abortion access for all,” said NNAF board co-chair Eesha Pandit. “Marlene’s leadership took an idea, that everyone should have access to the reproductive health care they need, and grew it into a movement of people all around the country who step up every day to make abortion access a reality, not just an inaccessible legal right.”
The award will be presented each year during the organization’s National Organizing Summit. NNAF plans to recognize “one Fund member or ally who embodies Marlene’s bold stance and brave leadership in abortion funding and advocacy.”
Gerber Fried is faculty director of the Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program (CLPP) at Hampshire. A long-time reproductive rights activist and NNAF’s founding president, Gerber Fried served for 21 years on the NNAF board. She was also founding president and continues to serve on the board of the Abortion Rights Fund of Western Massachusetts. She works on abortion advocacy internationally with the Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights.
Gerber Fried was the 2014 Felicia Stewart Advocacy Award recipient as well as a Warrior Woman Award from SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective.
