Statement of Support for the University of Virginia and Charlottesville
A Statement issued by President Lash, Vice President Rueschmann, Vice President Lopez, and Vice President McEneany
We are appalled by the violence, racism, anti-Semitism and bigotry by white supremacists, neo-Nazis, white nationalist and alt-right groups who marched on the University of Virginia campus and the city of Charlottesville this past weekend. We stand in solidarity with the University of Virginia and the community of Charlottesville, and express our deepest sympathy and support to the families of the victims of this violence.
These acts of domestic terrorism, intolerance, intimidation and hate are unacceptable and we must resist them. As a Hampshire community, we value inclusiveness and equality, civil and human rights for all. And we are committed as a community to working to uphold these values.
In just a few weeks our campus community will be vibrant with students, staff, and faculty who bring diverse histories, perspectives, and life experiences. Let us take the time to learn from one another and listen to our diverse stories. Together we will fight against the bigotry and racism that targets vulnerable members of our community and country and threatens the values we cherish at Hampshire College.
Jonathan Lash, President
Eva Rueschmann, Vice President for Academic Affairs
Gloria Lopez, Vice President for Student Affairs
Mary McEneany, Vice President for Finance and Administration
