Student Sculpts with “Collaborative” Biological Materials

At Hampshire College, every student completes a "Div III," a yearlong, advanced study project, similar to a master’s thesis.

“I was unsatisfied with the materials that are often provided in academic sculpture spaces — plaster and clay and wax — and then I found out about biological materials," says Nadja. "Things made out of plant and animal matter… That I could birth completely out of dust and powder and water and start totally from scratch.”

Nadja Mogilewski 20F exhibited her work in the Hampshire College Art Gallery along with two other graduating students with whom she worked closely throughout the process. She explains how they helped her find depth and joy in the process.
