Dr. Cate O’Keefe 95F Named Executive Director of New England Fisheries Management Council
With extensive experience in the industry, and having served on multiple teams within the organization, O’Keefe was named executive director on June 1.
The New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC) is one of eight regional councils established to conserve and manage fishery resources within the federal 200-mile limit off the coasts of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. O’Keefe assumes the role of executive director in mid-July.
O’Keefe has worked in New England fisheries research and management for more than 20 years, focusing on the intersection of science and policy. She also owns and is principal consultant of Fishery Applications Consulting Team, which provides technical, research, and facilitation services to a wide range of clients, including the New England Council for scallop and monkfish, as well as offshore wind companies, fishing industry organizations, global consulting firms, academic institutions, and research organizations.
In addition, O’Keefe currently serves as vice chair of the Scientific and Statistical Committee at NEFMC, president of the American Institute of Fishery Research Biologists, and as a professor at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School for Marine Science & Technology (SMAST), having rapidly earned promotions there from research technician to research assistant to research professor to adjunct faculty.
O’Keefe holds a B.A. from Hampshire in biology and fisheries, an M.A. from the Boston University Marine Program and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth SMAST.
