Solo Exhibition by Internationally Renowned Video Artist Nicole Cohen 88F at Stony Brook

Comprising videos, collages, and photographic work, the exhibition is a mid-career survey of Cohen’s intriguing exploration of perception and identity as viewed through interior spaces and architectural environments. Her work often overlays contemporary imagery with historical photographs from the pages of vintage magazines, domestic interiors, period rooms, historical paintings, and iconic architectural spaces to comment on socially constructed space.

“Going to Hampshire was a game changer for me,” she says. “The educational structure of Divisions and selecting courses based on what interested me enabled me to find my direction. I was able to custom-design my own education and thrive in the arts, with my own studio space and professors who treated me like an equal professional. Their unique backgrounds and working in their fields made it possible for me to envision how all of my seemingly unrelated interests might connect.”

Super Vision features Cohen’s video and photography pieces in an immersive environment. On view is work from her major projects over the last 20 years, as well as a new installation piece. The exhibition was curated by Director and Curator of the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery Karen Levitov.

Says the artist Adam Schrader, writing in Artnet, “We appreciate some of the same artistic concepts: how to blend analog and digital formats, how to blend static images with video, and how to generate dreamlike settings through photographic surrealism by way of double-exposure and collage.”

“I’m still reaping the benefits of my education at Hampshire,” says Cohen. “I use the skills I gained there every day, and many of my Hampshire friends attended the exhibition and reached out — even my professors — to show their support. One of the installers on Super Vision told me they looked me up and couldn’t believe it, we both went to Hampshire! The community is strong and it’s a philosophy that shapes my outlook to this day. My first solo show was my Hampshire Div III!”
